《Seven Children, One Unyielding Path》
Hello everyone, I’m Peggy.
In my late forties, my husband left our family. Facing seven young children, I couldn’t work a regular job, nor could I afford a nanny. At my lowest point, we had only a few hundred ringgit left in savings. But looking into my children’s clear eyes, I knew I had no room to retreat.
Life always finds a way. I unexpectedly discovered my children’s talent for performance. To survive, I took them to perform, starting from small charity shows and working our way up to television programs and grand illusion stage productions. We even blended Chinese face-changing with multi-ethnic traditional costumes and dances, setting a record in the Malaysia Book of Records and winning the prestigious international Merlin Award, bringing Malaysia’s vibrant culture to over twenty countries.
Even while performing to make ends meet, I set a strict rule for my children: education came first. Today, all seven of them have graduated from university and built successful careers. The hardships that forced them to grow up early ultimately forged their pride and resilience.
Once those grueling years passed, at 66, I turned my life’s focus toward culture and charity. Proud of my Baba Nyonya heritage, I dedicated myself to promoting the Kebaya and other traditional ethnic garments, directing the proceeds back into charitable causes to ensure our heritage passes down through generations. When MCO hit and disrupted our lives again, our family rolled up our sleeves to make Ondeh-Ondeh, eventually inspiring my children to open their own Nyonya restaurant. Every time life threw a giant wave at us, we simply found another way to stand back up.
