《Managing Business with Wisdom, Winning Trust through Value》

I am Joanne Tan, Founder of JK & Partners.

Many believe that the hardest part of entrepreneurship is securing capital or penetrating markets. For me, however, the most critical challenge lies in finding aligned partners and building mutual trust.

I was not born brave. As the eldest daughter, I used to be an introverted and self-doubting girl. That changed when my father, overwhelmed by severe financial pressure, borrowed from loan sharks and passed away following our family’s darkest period. Having just entered the workforce, my younger brother and I had to dedicate half of our salaries to keep the household afloat. That season of hardship taught me the true weight of responsibility at an early age and gave me a deep empathy for the burdens others carry.

The defining turning point in my life came when my former employer asked me, “Why shouldn’t you be the one writing the checks?” That single question sparked a drive within me. Having worked in audit, accounting, and part-time insurance, I ultimately anchored myself in my core strengths and founded JK & Partners. My goal is to leverage my years of professional expertise not merely to execute tasks, but to create meaningful, enduring value for businesses.

Traditionally, accounting is viewed merely as tax filing and bookkeeping. In my eyes, however, the story behind the numbers is what truly matters. A true accountant is not a data entry clerk, but a strategic business advisor who accompanies an enterprise through long-term growth. A truly valuable accountant should not just record the past, they must think from the business owner’s perspective to assist with strategic planning, risk mitigation, cash flow optimization, and legally enhancing overall operational efficiency through professional guidance.

Over the years, my greatest sense of accomplishment has come not from the number of clients signed, but from earning their genuine trust. Some clients have decided to partner with me purely over a phone call, without ever meeting in person. Other business owners have shared that what they appreciate most is my willingness to patiently answer their queries during late nights or weekends. To me, that is never just a message—it is a sacred trust. I have always believed that running a business is never easy. If I can bring peace of mind to an entrepreneur a little sooner, that is where my true value lies.

From a once-lost eldest daughter to a trusted corporate advisor today, I deeply appreciate that wisdom is far more vital than raw capability. Wisdom is the art of judgment, discernment, knowing when to choose or let go, and consistently standing in others’ shoes to create real value.

If people mention Joanne one day, I do not need any pretentious titles. I only hope they remember me as “someone genuine and trustworthy, who truly helped many business owners.” I believe if my father could see me today, he would be truly proud of his daughter.

Responsibility is not a burden, but a transformation. When you possess the courage and wisdom to face life’s lowest points and focus on empowering others first, success will naturally find its way to you.
