《Adversity Does Not Define Your Worth; It Is The Courage To Keep Growing That Determines How Far You Can Go》
I’m Rachel Wong, 黄耀婷, from an ordinary family in Teluk Intan, Perak. I have always been cheerful and positive by nature. Perhaps influenced by my father’s perseverance and my mother’s gentle, optimistic and humorous personality, I gradually developed a positive outlook towards the challenges of life.
Although I grew up in an ordinary family, my childhood was never one of hardship. My parents raised seven children. I had four older brothers and one older sister, all much older than me, so whenever something happened, they were always there to look after and protect me.
I married at the age of 23. In my thirties, I went through a difficult period in my marriage after years of conflict and struggle. In the end, the father of my children chose the life he wanted, while I took on the responsibility of caring for our two sons. At that time, my younger son was only three years old. I still remember rushing from morning until night, constantly moving between work and taking care of my children. There were days when I was so exhausted that even the nerves in my hands and feet trembled. Looking back, it was frightening. Yet no matter how difficult life became, I never complained. I have always believed that happiness has no fixed definition. Today, I consider myself fortunate because both of my sons have grown up well, my elder son is already married, and I can finally devote myself wholeheartedly to pursuing my own goals in life.
After my divorce, I chose entrepreneurship and invested deeply in professional development so that I could better accompany my children as they grew. While raising them, I continued upgrading myself and obtained professional qualifications as a certified beautician, professional makeup artist, professional image consultant, as well as a university qualification in medical nutrition consulting.
Many people ask me why I chose to become an image consultant. In the past, my family and I operated a restaurant, but that was more about helping the family than pursuing something I truly loved. So when I later continued my studies, almost every course I chose was related to beauty — because beauty has always been what I love most.
Image is not Fashion. Image is Visual Communication.
Many people believe that following trends and wearing designer labels automatically means knowing how to dress well. But that is not the case. Knowing how to dress and simply matching clothes are two different things. As an image consultant, my role is not merely to make someone look more attractive. It is about helping a person communicate their values, identity and professionalism through colour, clothing, style and intentional visual presentation.
I believe there are many people who are genuinely capable and talented, but they simply have not yet been seen. I hope to help them become visible and allow their strengths and value to be recognised by more people.
Today, through image education and my own personal journey, I hope to help more people — especially women — build confidence, elevate their self-worth and create a life that reflects who they truly are.
If I could say one thing to someone who is going through a difficult period, it would be this: Women must learn to focus on themselves, cultivate themselves and continue growing. Expand your knowledge, read more, nurture your heart and develop wisdom. When you truly understand your own value, you will be able to face whatever comes your way with greater calmness and become a better version of yourself.
