《Financial Independence: The Foundation Of My Resilience In The Face Of Life’s Uncertainties》

Hello everyone, I am Edica Chung.

I grew up in a warm, middle-class family as the youngest daughter. Although I never lacked for anything, from a young age I found a deep sense of fulfillment in earning my own way.

At nine years old, I began taking on part-time jobs—working in bookstores, selling earrings, and helping out in hair salons. By the age of twelve, I was managing my own schooling and living expenses, and I rarely asked my family for financial support from that point forward. That early journey taught me a vital lesson: for a woman, financial independence is about much more than earning money; it provides the quiet strength, confidence, and freedom to navigate whatever changes life brings.

After graduating at twenty, I officially launched my career in the banking industry—a field I have dedicated myself to for over two decades. As a naturally pragmatic person, I have always anchored my career on a single principle: strictly managing my finances to build a secure foundation. Life rarely unfolds exactly as planned. When the unexpected strikes, financial stability allows us to step back from panic and focus on solutions. And life did, indeed, test me with the unexpected.

As a mother of three, I faced the heartbreaking loss of my husband to an early passing. It was a deeply painful season, further compounded by the uncertainty of the global pandemic. Yet, looking at my young children, I knew I could not let grief paralyze me. I chose to keep working, keep living, raise my children, and hold our home together. It wasn’t that I felt no pain, but rather that I understood the most grounded choice I could make for myself and my children was to accept reality and press forward. Going through that experience showed me that while a career matters, family is equally paramount.

Today, I remain dedicated to my work, but I no longer let it consume all my time. I place my family at the heart of my life, prioritizing quality time with my partner and children. I have found my own harmony between work and family—moving away from relentless ambition and embracing deep contentment.

Looking back, I am more convinced than ever that uncertainty is an inevitable part of life. We cannot control what tomorrow holds, but we can choose how we prepare ourselves today.

Treasure the present, maintain financial independence, and cherish the people beside you. No matter what challenges life presents, face them with courage, accept them with grace, and remind yourself: life goes on, and we can continue to walk forward, one step at a time, with unwavering confidence.
