The Story of Freya Leong

Roots in Ipoh

Born in Ipoh, nestled among limestone hills of Perak, Freya Leong grew up in a modest terrace home with her hardworking mother while her father laboured far from home during the week. Ipoh’s charm lay in its serene kopitiams, cave temples, and quiet heritage streets—not luxury. The only “high fashion” came from the GUESS boutique at Kinta City. Walking past its gleaming windows, Freya wondered what wearing something expensive would feel like—something that whispered, “You belong somewhere bigger.”

Initially a STPM biology student, she believed deeply that education was her path to success. With persistence, she persuaded her mother to let her study business at Sunway University, funded by a PTPTN loan. Sunway Victoria University—double majoring in Marketing and International Trade. With just a modest RM 500 monthly allowance at Sunway, Freya supported herself by working as part-time promoters.

After graduation, she secured her first full-time role as a medical representative in Kuala Lumpur, where base salaries range from RM 3,000 to RM 5,000 per month, with commissions potentially increasing total earnings to RM 6,000–RM 9,000 monthly. This role, driven by performance-based incentives, enabled her to achieve financial independence in the city.

Freya Leong’s Journey: From Aspiration to Adversity

After relocating to Kuala Lumpur to pursue her career, Freya married in 2018. Shortly thereafter, she faced a life-threatening challenge: a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. This condition, where a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus—often in a fallopian tube—can lead to severe internal bleeding and, if untreated, can be fatal. Ectopic pregnancies are responsible for approximately 6% of maternal deaths during the first trimester of pregnancy, making it the leading cause of maternal death during this stage of pregnancy.

Her journey from a medical representative to a pageant contestant promoting the rich culture and heritage of Perak only won a title of Miss Charity Queen. Choosing love over a solitary path, she embraced the support and companionship of her partner, embarking on a journey of shared dreams and mutual growth. In 2018, Freya bravely returned to work just two weeks after emergency surgery for a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, driven by financial pressures—keenly feeling the pinch of living costs in Kuala Lumpur and needing to support herself. Women recovering from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy typically resume lightduty work after 1–2 weeks, fully recover physically by 4–6 weeks, while emotional healing often takes much longer—sometimes several months—and requires patience, support, and selfcare.

Freya Leong’s journey exemplifies remarkable resilience and determination in the face of adversity. After surviving a life-threatening ruptured ectopic pregnancy in 2018, she returned to work just two weeks post-surgery, driven by financial necessity and the high cost of living in Kuala Lumpur. This decision, while demonstrating her determination, also left her grappling with anxiety, grief, and PTSD symptoms. However, she embraced post-traumatic growth through therapy, support networks, and a commitment to personal development.

Freya and her husband took a bold step—leaving her stable banking career to launch their own financial consultancy focused on SME clients in Kuala Lumpur. Leveraging her business background, Certified Master Trainer credential, and professional network.

Freya’s consultancy offers tailored financial planning, risk assessment, and investment advisory for SMEs—helping small businesses thrive financially and personally, and showcasing her resilience transformed into leadership and service.

Freya embraced a growth mindset and channeled her recovery into transformation: she overcame post-trauma from her ectopic pregnancy, completed a Certified Master Trainer program, and achieved significant post-traumatic growth, emerging stronger in her banking career, equipped with new skills and resilience.+

In early January 2025, Freya participated in the Mrs. Malaysia Tourism Queen International pageant in Sentul, KL. Against strong competition, she achieved an impressive 3rd Runner-Up placement in the Mrs Malaysia category and won the Best Catwalk and Most Popular subsidiary titles—recognition of her resilience and charisma.

Freya’s story continues to shine: from humble beginnings in Ipoh, overcoming personal trauma, excelling professionally, earning a Master Trainer certification, launching a financial consultancy with her husband, and now proving her presence on the national pageantry stage. She embraces new challenges with grace, confidence, and unshakeable determination.
