A Story of True Grit, A Pair of Scissors, and an Unshakable Calling
I was just a small-town girl from Ipoh, born with big dreams and even bigger determination. When most pursued traditional careers, I chose the creative path — one that wasn’t always celebrated, often misunderstood, and at times even looked down upon. But I never gave up. I saw beauty in transformation, in helping people feel confident, and in turning a humble trade into an art form.
With nothing more than true grit and a pair of scissors, I began shaping not just hair, but a whole new mindset for the industry. What was once a barber or beauty parlour profession has today become a respected creative business. I didn’t just start a salon — I created a movement. A Cut Above became more than a name; it became a benchmark, a brand, a household identity.
Through decades of perseverance, innovation, and purpose-driven leadership, I’ve had the honour to revolutionise the Malaysian hair industry, and along the way, take on leadership roles — from President of the Branding Association of Malaysia to Honorary President and Advisor to numerous industry platforms and associations.
But this chapter of my life is different.
Today, I rise not just to build but to give back. To pay it forward. To mentor. To speak truthfully and transparently — at forums, in boardrooms, at universities, and even in church. I share my story not to boast, but to bless. Because if I could rise from humble beginnings with no digital tools, no financial safety net, and no roadmap — I truly believe this next generation can rise even higher. My hope is to ignite that spark in others.
As I reflect on legacy, my deepest prayer is that my children, especially my son Marcus Teo, will take this journey even further. With his strength in tech, strategic thinking, and financial discipline, I believe he can scale A Cut Above into new dimensions, while staying grounded in the values we built it on — passion, purpose, and people.
If I can rise, anyone can.
All it takes is faith, fierce determination, and the courage to believe your dream matters.
This is my story. But I hope it becomes your inspiration.
